Why I Believe Gut Health Is the Missing Link to Better Vitamin D Absorption
When people think about vitamin D, they immediately think about sunshine. While that's certainly where the story begins, I've come to believe that one of the biggest reasons so many people remain deficient has less to do with the amount of sunlight they receive and more to do with what's happening inside their gut.
You can spend time outdoors, eat vitamin D-rich foods, and take quality supplements, but if your digestive system is inflamed or your microbiome is out of balance, your body may struggle to absorb and utilise nutrients efficiently.
That's why I believe health always starts in the gut.
Over the past decade, research has transformed our understanding of the gut microbiome. We now know that the trillions of bacteria living in our digestive tract influence far more than digestion. They help regulate immune function, inflammation, metabolism, hormone balance, brain health, and the absorption of nutrients that every cell in the body depends upon.
In fact, around 70% of our immune activity is associated with the gut. When the microbiome is healthy, it helps maintain the integrity of the intestinal lining, supports normal immune responses, and creates the ideal environment for nutrient absorption.
Unfortunately, modern living works against us.
Repeated courses of antibiotics, processed foods, environmental toxins, chronic stress, alcohol, poor sleep, and everyday chemical exposure can all disrupt the microbiome. As beneficial bacteria decline, unwanted microbes can flourish, contributing to chronic low-grade inflammation within the digestive tract.
When the gut becomes inflamed, its ability to efficiently absorb nutrients may be reduced. This is especially important for fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E and K, which rely on a healthy digestive system for optimal absorption.
